Gag Me With Kraft Singles? Processed Cheese Slices Recalled Over Choking Risk

While they’ve been known to make many people gag even before taking a bite, Kraft Singles are being recalled over a very real risk of choking on the product. The flimsy packaging has reportedly been sticking to the cheese slices, causing consumers to unknowingly swallow pieces of the plastic film. (Yum.)

The newly merged Kraft Heinz Company says the voluntary recall comes because at least ten consumers have complained about the packaging sticking to the processed cheese slices, with at least three of those individuals reporting choking on the plastic.

“We deeply regret this situation and apologize to any consumers we have disappointed,” the company said in a statement. “Consumers who purchased this product should not eat it. They should return it to the store where purchased for an exchange or full refund.”

The recall comes just several months after Kraft was forced to recall 242,000 cases of its popular blue box Macaroni & Cheese Dinner, after consumers reported finding pieces of metal in the product. Kraft said the metal fragments were due to a faulty piece of machinery.

Kraft Singles were also in the news back in March after the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics gave the processed cheese products its first ever “Kids Eat Right” stamp of approval that was met with serious criticism. “Kraft is well known as a sponsor of AND,” author and NYU professor Marion Nestle wrote on her Food Politics blog. “Such seals are usually money-raising gimmicks. I’m wondering if ‘proud supporter of’ means that Kraft pays AND for use of this seal. If so, I’d like to know what the seal costs.”

The cheese slices recall applies to the 3-lb. and 4-lb. sizes of Kraft Singles American and White American pasteurized prepared cheeses with Best By dates of December 29, 2015 through January 4, 2016. The 36,000 cases of cheeses have manufacturing codes S54 and S55.
